The game the Raven Tribe boys are playing is a men's gambling game called shen. It's played by throwing two small flat pieces of bone or stone at the game surface, which is a simple geometric design--usually a checkerboard or diamond pattern of four or eight squares--and calling light or dark. High score wins each round. Shen "boards" are commonly sewn from different colored pieces of hide, and are rolled up and carried on hunting expeditions; a "lucky" shen board may be a keepsake carried around for many years. If a shen board is not available, the design may be scratched into the earth, but there's part of the shen board visible by Coren's knee at the bottom of this page (and near Kafal's foot on Page 9, panel 5). As well as being played for tangible rewards, shen may also be played strictly as a game of skill, with men accruing machismo by hitting their target.
